What are the options for renting trekking and mountaineering gear for a trip?

If you do not already have the personal gear and equipment included in our kit list within Appendix of Trip Dossier then you could consider renting to save the cost of purchasing especially if you are unlikely to use again in the future. There are several options for renting gear for our trips either at home before departure or on arrival to Kathmandu.

It is possible to rent a sleeping bag in Kathmandu and this is the cheapest option at around GBP1 (US$1.5) per day. Please bear in mind for your packing purposes these will be Nepalese made sleeping bags (more feathers than down!) so are quite bulky and heavy. We recommend Shonas Rental as their bags are good quality and clean however it is best to reserve in advance. Shonas insist you use a liner bag with their bags for cleanliness, you can bring one with you or purchase from their store. Shonas bags are warm as many of our past trekkers have used their Five season bags at High Camp on Mera Peak and feedback has been positive so far.

For more information about what is available to rent at Shonas please get in touch with us as we have more details included in our Nepal Pre Trip information document.

You can rent mountaineering equipment from The Mountain Company, we have a store in Kathmandu and will give this gear to you on arrival. For our mountaineering expeditions (Mera Peak, Island Peak and Makalu to Everest via Sherpani Pass) we have "harness packs" for rent. This includes harness (Black Diamond Alpine BOD), ATC belay device with large carabiner, three scewgate carabiners, Petzl handle ascender (jumar), two slings and prussik cord. Rental of a harness pack for the duration of your expedition costs £30 (US$50). We also have crampons for rental, both Grivel G12s and Climbing Technology Nuptse Classic twelve point crampons. Rental of crampons for the duration of your expedition costs £15 (US$20).

Please contact TMC office for availability, it is worth pointing out we have limited stock of rental gear so you need to reserve in advance.

The other option is to rent a sleeping bag and mountaineering gear from your home country before arrival to Kathmandu. If you are UK based you can rent boots and other mountaineering gear from For rental clothing and sleeping bags in UK take a look at
