Dagana & Lawagu Pass

This is a trek to the hidden valley of Dagana crossing over the picturesque Lari Gang (4,267m) and Lawagu (4,427m) passes with magnificent views of Mount Kangchenjunga, Mount Chomolhari and Jitchu Drake. This is a remote trek into a wilderness region of South Bhutan and is very rarely trekked by other groups.

We start this adventure with time for acclimatisation by walking up to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger nest) and also staying in the picturesque Haa Valley at 2,700m. We also have two nights in Thimphu and trek up to Phajoding monastery at 3,600m. By spending this time at altitude before starting the trek it will prepare us for our mountain days.

Dagana and Lawagu pass is a unique trek with both high altitude and wilderness forest experience. On the Thimphu side, as we make our way up the open rolling hills to the Lawagu pass at 4,427m we get Himalayan panoramic views including Mount Kangchenjunga, Mount Chomolhari and Jitchu Drake.

Once we have crossed the pass with its stunning views, we descend into the forest where we experience the trees, flowers and animal life. We continue the trek through the forest to the end point at the rarely visited Dagana village with is impressive Dzong.

After visiting the capital Thimpu to experience the sights, we will leave the land of the thunder dragon on our spectacular flight across the Himalaya. This trip will be of interest to trekkers looking for a remote experience in the Bhutan Himalaya.

In November 2019 we sent one of our international leaders, Adrian (Ade) Summers, on a reconnaissance trek to cross Lawagu pass and to walk to Dagana and this itinerary has been designed based on his feedback and suggestions.
